Conservative MP Edward Timpson to stand down at the next election

Edward Timpson has announced that he will stand down as the Conservative MP for Eddisbury at the next election.

Timpson, who is only 49, was first elected as the MP for Crewe & Nantwich at a by-election in 2008. He served served as a junior minister from 2012 to 2017, with his brief covering children and families. He was then appointed as solicitor general for England and Wales by prime minister Boris Johnson in 2022.

Commenting on his departure, Mr Timpson said: “I am extremely proud to have been able to represent the Eddisbury Constituency—in which I have lived since I was 14—and I have been grateful that this has given me the opportunity to make a difference locally in a number of ways. …

“However, I turn 50 this year, and want to use this opportunity to both draw on my family law practice prior to my election, and my children and families legislative and law officer work in government, to return in part to legal practice, but also advocacy roles for vulnerable children and families”.
