Boris Johnson backs Labour’s call to ban MP consultant jobs

Boris Johnson has proposed changes to MP code of conduct rules after weeks of sleaze allegations.

The prime minister’s announcement came just before Labour leader Keir Starmer’s press conference announcing that Labour would “stop the revolving door between government and the companies that ministers are supposed to regulate” with a ban for five years after leaving office.

In a tweet, Johnson’s laid out his proposals:

1) The Code of Conduct for MPs is updated

2) MPs who are prioritising outside interests over their constituents are investigated and appropriately punished

3) MPs are banned from acting as paid political consultants or lobbyists

Starmer was informed of the prime minister’s u-turn during his conference, and proclaimed: “If he is accepting the motion in full, that’s a significant victory for us in our work to clean up politics.”
