Climate protests hit London

Saturday, 6 December 2008 12:02 AM

Protests against climate change will descend upon London today, in an international campaign including over 70 countries.

Protestors are campaigning against Heathrow expansion, new coal power stations, the expansion of agro-fuels and for the use of renewable energy.

"Whilst the government has committed to cutting UK carbon emissions by 80 per cent by 2050, we need to ensure the actions reflect the words, and that plans to open new coal mines or build new runways are met with mass resistance," Susan Nash of NUS said.

"Our members are long standing activists in the fight against climate change and this march is another chance for us to mobilise and demand a green, more sustainable future."

The protest will start in Hyde Park, at Speaker's Corner, and move to Parliament Square.

Speakers will include Lib Dem Leader Nick Clegg, Green Party leader Caroline Lucas, ex-environment minister Michael Meacher and Campaign against Climate Change president George Monbiot.
