Prisoners kept inside cells for 21 hours a day with no fresh air or shower access as prisons fail to return to pre-covid regimes

During a sitting of the Justice Committee, discussion was had over the daily routines of prisoners after a report showed that many prisons had failed to return their inmates to their normal, pre-covid system.

Edward Timpson, Conservative MP for Eddisbury, noted this detail of the report and that some prisoners were being kept locked inside for 21 hours per day with no access to fresh air or showers. He asked the Prisons Minister, Damian Hinds, for reassurance that the issue was being dealt with.

“We take the findings of the report very seriously”, he assured.
