New BASC DSC1 course cuts costs and saves time for members
BASC has introduced a new, more flexible way to achieve the Deer Stalking Certificate (DSC1). For those seeking certification but unable to commit to a four-day course, BASC’s new ‘assessment-only’ days offer an efficient alternative, reducing both time and cost.
With assessment-only days held at various locations across the UK, participants can take all five required modules in just one day. Before attending, candidates can prepare using a DSC1 manual available for £15 (digital) or £27 (hard copy), along with a set of online revision questions. This option allows individuals to study at their own pace and come prepared for the assessments.
For BASC members, the assessment-only day offers substantial savings and is available for £145. All five DSC1 modules are accessible, including written multiple-choice exams, game meat hygiene, visual species identification, safety, and shooting assessments.
Participants who pass all modules receive the Deer Management Qualification (DMQ) Deer Stalking Certificate 1, with options to advance to the DSC2 for full certification under the Food Hygiene Regulations 2004.
“We’re delighted to offer this assessment-only option for the Deer Stalking Certificate (DSC1), which allows members to achieve their qualification at a fraction of the usual cost” said Dr Peter Marshall, BASC’s head of training and education.
“Typically, the full four-day course costs over £300, but with this new approach, BASC members pay just £145. This streamlined format not only offers considerable savings but also reduces the need for extended travel and overnight stays, making the process more accessible for those who can’t take extended time away. BASC remains committed to providing flexible, affordable training that supports responsible deer management and the conservation work our community values.”
