John McFall’s heir apparent as chair of the Treasury select committee faces a growing challenge from Tory backbencher Andrew Tyrie.

The deputy chair during the last parliament, Conservative MP Michael Fallon, had been widely expected to success Mr McFall.

But under new Commons rules which require select committee chairs to be elected he now faces a challenge from Chichester MP Mr Tyrie.

Mr McFall, a former schools minister, has just given up a non-executive directorship at inter-dealer broker Tullett Prebon to avoid a conflict of interest.

But Mr Tyrie, who worked in the Treasury under Nigel Lawson and John Major, won last year’s ‘backbencher of the year’ prize from the Spectator.

The election takes place on Wednesday next week.
