Queen’s Speech 2008: Devolution

Local democracy and devolution had a minor place in today’s Queen’s Speech.

The government will “work closely the devolved administrations in the interests of all the people of the United Kingdom,” the Queen said.

The local democracy, economic development and construction bill was drawn up to ask councils to promote democracy through empowering citizens and communities and allowing them to become more active in their communities.

All social housing tenants will also receive more choice and protection as well as influence over how their homes are managed.

The Queen said the government intended to “bring forward legislation to promote local economic development and to create greater opportunities for community and individual involvement in local decision-making”.
