David Miliband joined international condemnations of last night’s violence in Belgrade, describing attacks against the UK embassy as unacceptable.

The foreign secretary was responding to reports of violence as 200,000 people demonstrated against Kosovo’s declaration of independence from Serbia on Sunday.

The US embassy was stormed by rioters and briefly set fire to, while other embassies including the UK also came under attack.

Mr Miliband said in a statement issued last night the damage to the UK embassy had been “limited” and said the building remained secure.

“While the Kosovo issue raises strong feelings in Serbia, no cause can justify such displays of violence,” he said.

“We have made clear to the Serbian government that we expect them to fully uphold their obligations to protect our embassy and other diplomatic premises in Belgrade.”
