Haiti consulate suspended

Public operations at the British consulate office in the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince have been temporarily suspended because of the security risk.

A statement issued by the foreign office today said it continues to advise against all but essential travel to the island following an increasing threat to personal security.

“Incidences of violence and kidnappings for ransom, specifically targeting foreigners, are on the increase. The kidnappings are taking place mainly in Port-au-Prince,” it said.

It added: “There is no British embassy in Haiti and public operations at the British Consulate office in Port-au-Prince have been temporarily suspended due to the security situation.”

Visa and consular enquiries have been redirected to the embassy in the Dominican Republic.
