Manchester United gaffer Sir Alex Ferguson has received treatment for a minor heart scare.

Sir Alex was given electric “zap” treatment less than 24 hours after Man U were beaten 2-0 in the FA Carling Cup by West Bromwich Albion.

61-year old Sir Alex is reported to have undergone cardioversion, a treatment to correct supraventricular tachycardia, or irregular heartbeat.

Prime Minister Tony Blair received the same treatment for the complaint in October.

The Reds’ boss stayed in Manchester’s private Alexandra Hospital and was operated on by heart consultant Derek Rowlands.

The Scot has received heart tests over the past six months after experiencing some chest pain.

He is expected back on work today, ahead of tomorrow’s game with Aston Villa.

A statement by United spokesman Paddy Harverson read: “Sir Alex received treatment in hospital today following a routine check-up several months ago which revealed a minor heart irregularity.

“The procedure went well and Sir Alex is resting at home and is due back at work tomorrow.”

Sir Alex is poised to sign a new GBP20million deal with Manchester United in the next week, giving him another four years in charge at the club.

The Sun newspaper says executives at Old Trafford may rethink offering Sir Alex the lucrative contract.
