Prisoners riot in East Sussex jail

An internal investigation is currently underway at Lewes Prison in East Sussex after 30 remand prisoners rioted.

The incident of “concerted indiscipline” took place on Tuesday night.

Prisoners reportedly ran amok, smashing two offices, destroying furniture and leaving taps running. No cells were reported to be out of use.

Specially trained staff were sent into the jail’s A Wing to restore order after prison officers were forced to abandon the area.

One prison officer was treated in hospital for cuts caused by broken glass. There were no other injuries.

Around 20 prisoners are being transferred out of the prison and some could face possible criminal charges.

In a statement the Prison Service said, “Specially-trained control and restraint staff intervened to restore order and control in A Wing at 1.15am. By 1.33am, the incident was over.”

It is unclear what started the riot.

Lewes is a “category B” jail which serves as a local prison for the courts in the area.
