Snap polling suggests voters prefer Starmer’s conference speech to Johnson’s

Yesterday evening Opinium released snap polling suggesting that voters preferred Sir Keir Starmer’s speech at the Labour party conference over the Prime Minister’s keynote address to his party conference yesterday in Manchester.

55% of those polled say they agreed with what Johnson said, compared to 63% for Starmer.

According to Sky News, which commissioned the poll, respondents only viewed excerpts from the speeches.

However, most members of the general public do not watch party conference speeches in full and thus the widespread impression of them is generally shaped by the media coverage they receive.

The pollster said the reason for the better reception of Starmer’s speech is aptly down to Johnson’s divisiveness as a political figure.

They added that the speech “still did a good job at keeping his election-winning coalition happy”.

80% of Conservative 2019 voters say they agreed with what the Prime Minister had to say, just 16% disagreed.
