MPs to vote on plans to mandate vaccines for NHS staff in England

Health secretary Sajid Javid told MPs today that the government will make vaccines compulsory for NHS England staff.

He said the decision was in line with advice from NHS leaders and the evidence from the department of health’s consultation.

Those who do not have face to face contact with patients, and those who are medically exempt will not be included in the new rules.

The government will publish an impact assessment of the policy, and MPs will then vote on whether to introduce it.

If approved by MPs, the rule will come into effect 12 weeks after the vote.

The government aims this to be by 1 April.
