Javid: Cases could hit 100,000 a day but no ‘Plan B’ needed yet

Health secretary Sajid Javid has warned that covid cases could hit 100,000 a day, but said that the so-called ‘plan b’ is not necessary yet.

The plan b was laid out by ministers earlier this year, and would bring back compulsory mask-wearing for crowded spaces.

Javid said: “We’ve always known that the winter months would provide the greatest threat to our covid recovery…ahead of winter, as we’ve expected, we’re starting to see that impact.”

On booster jabs, the health secretary said that the government “will do everything we can to maintain our lead by strengthening our vaccination programme as our primary line of defence.”

But the health secretary sent a warning to the public regarding a return of restrictions, saying people should get the jabs “not just to save lives, but to keep your freedoms too.”
