Foreign Secretary beginning week-long visit to Southeast Asia today

Foreign Secretary, Liz Truss will arrive in Malaysia today to begin a week-long visit to Southeast Asia. Truss will also visit Thailand and Indonesia.

In Malaysia, the Foreign Secretary will meet Prime Minister Ismail Sabri as well as her Malaysian counterpart, Saifuddin Abdullah.

The visit follows the agreement of a new partnership between the UK and the “Association of Southeast Asian Nations” (ASEAN). This agreement created a framework to pursue annual Foreign and Economic Minister meetings, where representatives of participating countries will be able to discuss economic and diplomatic ties.

The Foreign Secretary said: “Southeast Asia will be the engine of the global economy and I want Britain to be part of that, upgrading our economic and security relations with the region to reflect its growing importance”.
