Defence secretary tops grassroots Tory poll as Sunak plummets

The defence secretary has topped a poll of the Conservative party grassroots for the third month running.

In the fresh ConservativeHome poll, released today, Ben Wallace had a net satisfaction rating of 85+.

Wallace’s popularity has climbed alongside his role in the handling of the Ukraine crisis, following Russia’s 28 February invasion.

The online magazine publishes a monthly league table ranking government ministers based on a net satisfaction rating offered by party members.

Foreign secretary Liz Truss remains runner up on plus 64, while education secretary Nadhim Zahawi sits as third place with plus 60 points.

Following his mid-March Spring Statement, Sunak fell to third from the bottom.

After this, a row emerged over Sunak’s wife’s non-domiciled tax status. Sunak is now on minus 5.2 points, making him the only minister on minus points as it stands.

Home secretary Priti Patel’s rating has soared from minus 17 to plus 31.2, likely signalling the party grassroots’ approval of the government’s Rwanda plans.

Prime minister Boris Johnson is now the second least popular minister, with a rating of plus 6.6.
