Conservative MP Jonathan Gullis’ controversial bill defeated at first hurdle

MPs voted this afternoon by 188 votes to 69 to defeat Conservative MP Jonathan Gullis’ bill to override European Court of Human Rights rulings on asylum policy.

Mr Gullis proposed the 10-minute rule bill in a speech this afternoon, which was opposed by SNP MP Alison Thewliss.

Thewliss said it was “offensive” of Gullis to bring forward the bill on a day like today, when people have died crossing the channel.
