Clive Lewis: “Keir Starmer has gone down a dark path”

Labour MP Clive Lewis says “Keir Starmer has gone down a dark path” as he lamented the leadership’s decision not to back proportional representation.

Speaking at a Labour Party conference on building a progressive alliance, Lewis criticised the Labour leadership for ignoring Labour members over proportional representation.

A  key motion on PR was rejected during yesterday’s Labour conference after trade unions refused to back a resolution on electoral reform. Earlier this summer, 83% of Labour members indicated they would support proportional representation.

Lewis added that there has been “change on the left” in their thinking on PR, and that many in the party “understand the necessity for political realignment.

Caroline Lucas, Brighton Pavilion’s Green MP, agreed with Lewis.

Lucas claimed Labour’s route to power  is now far “more difficult” over the decision not to back PR.

Chairing the event, Neal Lawson, director of Compass, said: “I’ve never struggled with my party as much as I have this week.”
