Louise Edge of Greenpeace comments on reports that the decision on the like-for-like replacement of Trident has been delayed:
“The issue of Trident has split our society – from top generals and ministers to the man on the street.
“This delay gives us space to have the big debate about nuclear weapons which is so clearly needed.
“One that looks at the real costs, the real alternatives, and asks how the UK can best contribute to the global project to safely control nuclear materials and take phased steps towards zero nuclear weapons.
“The devil of today’s announcement will be in the detail. We need to ensure that this isn’t just political spin, and five years down the line we don’t find ourselves locked into multi-billion pound arms industry contracts for unwanted equipment, as we have with the aircraft carrier debacle.”
