Scotland’s vaccine passports to go ahead after failed legal challenge

Scotland’s vaccine passport scheme begin start on Friday after a judge struck down a legal challenge from nightclubs requesting a delay.

Under the new rules, people in Scotland will be required to prove they have received two doses of Coronavirus vaccine to enter nightclubs and other large events.

A legal challenge was lodged by the industry, arguing that the system was “discriminatory” and “disproportionate”.

Lord Burns, Senator of Scotland’s College of Justice rejected the challenge, noting that the plans had been approved by MSPs and would be open to regular review.

He argued that the passport scheme was an attempt to address the pandemic in a “balanced way”.

The regulations underpinning the scheme will come into force at 05:00 on Friday morning but have not yet been published.

The Scottish government has said the rules will not be enforced until 18 October in order to give venues time to test their systems.
