Those serving at least four years in jail could enjoy laxer early release rules, under plans confirmed by the Ministry of Justice.

Those convicted for four years or more but less than life will be released at the halfway point of their sentence under the provision, passed into law in the Criminal Justice and Immigration Act.

According to reports around 550 criminals will be set free as a result of the move, which was recommended in the Carter Review.

The MoJ said the move would allow the parole board to “focus resources on violent and sexual offenders”.

Probation supervision will be extended “to enhance public protection”, a spokesperson added. The paroled prisoners will be liable for immediate recall to prison if their behaviour gives cause for concern at any time in the second half of their sentence.

Sexual and violent offenders will be excluded from the scheme.
