Peter Fortune

MP for Bromley and Biggin Hill

Peter Fortune is the Conservative MP for Bromley and Biggin Hill, having first been elected to parliament at the 2024 general election.

In the 2024 general election, Fortune received 15,929 votes (34.0%). The Labour candidate, Oana Olaru-Holmes, received 15,627 votes (33.4%), while the Reform UK candidate, Alan Cook, secured 8,203 votes (17.5%). Fortune was duly elected with a majority of 302.

The Bromley and Biggin Hill constituency is located in the London Borough of Bromley, Greater London. It was newly created for the 2024 election, formed from parts of the abolished Bromley and Chislehurst seat, and parts of the Beckenham and Orpington constituencies.

Fortune is one of 26 new Conservative MPs that entered parliament at the 2024 general election, and the only newly elected Conservative MP in London.

Political Career

Peter Fortune currently serves as shadow parliamentary under secretary of state for business, innovation, science and trade. Fortune was appointed to this role as part of the August/September 2026 shadow ministerial reshuffle, Kemi Badenoch’s second as Conservative leader.

Fortune served as parliamentary private secretary (PPS) to the shadow science, innovation and technology team on the Conservative frontbench from November 2024 to September2026.

Fortune has sat as a member of the House of Commons public accounts committee (2024-2025).

In an article for the News Shopper, published May 2025, Fortune condemned London mayor Sadiq Khan’s plans to “build on swathes of green belt land surrounding London.”

He added: “If mayor Khan is serious about building new homes, he needs to address his failed policies that have frustrated housebuilding within inner London.

“Breaking his promise and building on the green belt is not the housing panacea he thinks.”

Fortune is listed as a member of the all-party parliamentary groups (APPGs) for chess (co-chair), cricket and private capital.

Fortune delivered his maiden speech on 11 September 2024 during a debate on building safety and resilience.

In it, he quipped: “Bromley and Biggin Hill is a long, thin and elegant constituency, which is why it comes as no surprise that its constituents chose me, an uncanny physical manifestation of the place.”

He added: “Moving on to politics, while we had our fair share of lefty types, notably anarcho-communist Peter Kropotkin, who lived with us for a bit, my favourite local communist has always been Coney Hall’s irrepressible Elsy Borders, who led the famous mortgage strike of 1937.

“Elsy intentionally defaulted on mortgage payments, demanding that the structural flaws in her newly acquired building be repaired. I cannot but help think how this relates to the substantive issue we are debating.

”While I have some Labour members onside, I can delight them further by informing them that we in Bromley and Biggin Hill also invented the modern income tax – but allow me to win back Conservative colleagues by explaining that the revenue raised was used to fight the French.”

Fortune wrote an article reflecting on his maiden speech for ConservativeHome.

He wrote: “A maiden speech is, by tradition and design, quite light-hearted… Tradition says you commend any other maiden speakers who go before you, praise your predecessors, and make a pitch to have the best constituency in Britain.”

Before entering parliament, Fortune served as a member of the London Assembly (AM) for Bexley and Bromley from 2021 to 2024. He was deputy leader of the Conservative group from 2021 to 2023.

Fortune served as a Conservative councillor on Bromley Council from 2010 to 2022. He served as deputy leader of Bromley Council from 2017 to 2021.

Fortune previously stood unsuccessfully as the Conservative candidate for the Lewisham East constituency at the 2015 and 2017 general elections, placing second both times behind Heidi Alexander.

Fortune was the Conservative candidate for Leeds Central at the 2019 general election, again finishing second.

Political Views

Leadership elections

Tory leadership 2024: Cleverly supported James Cleverly’s candidacy in the 2024 Conservative Party leadership election. The contest was triggered by the resignation of Rishi Sunak following the party’s defeat in the 2024 general election.

During the contest, Cleverly, the shadow home secretary, urged the party to “be more normal”. On 9 October, in a major upset, Cleverly was eliminated in the fourth ballot after his support dropped to 37 votes. The result was widely attributed to a failure of tactical voting by supporters who assumed his place in the final two was secure.

Cleverly, the former home secretary, served as the London Assembly member for Bexley and Bromley from 2008 to 2016

Brexit and Europe

Customs union vote (2025): In December 2025, Fortune voted against the UK-EU Customs Union (Duty to Negotiate) Bill. The bill, introduced under the ten-minute rule procedure by Liberal Democrat Europe spokesperson Al Pinkerton, sought to mandate the government to enter into negotiations with the European Union to establish a bespoke customs union.

Assisted dying

Fortune voted against the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill, better known as the assisted dying bill, at both second reading (November 2024) and third reading (June 2025).

Social values and conscience issues

Abortion decriminalisation (2025): Fortune voted against a backbench amendment to the Crime and Policing Bill that sought to decriminalise abortion in England and Wales in June 2025. The amendment, which was passed by a majority of 242 votes, removed women from the threat of prosecution for ending a pregnancy at any stage. As an issue of conscience, MPs were allowed to vote according to their personal beliefs.

Before Politics
