Queen addresses British troops

The Queen has today sent a Christmas message to British troops across the world.

Troops based in Iraq and elsewhere were able to tune in to hear the unprecedented festive address on British Forces Radio.

In it she praised the “spirit, good humour and courage” of troops stationed across the globe in what has been a “demanding” year.

“Very many of you listening today will be separated from your families this Christmas, which is hard for both you and those who are left at home,” she said.

“It has been a very demanding year. I am proud of the way you have risen to the challenges with typical professionalism.

“Wherever you are I would like to express my gratitude for your service this year and I send each and every one of you my good wishes for Christmas and the new year.”

Her Majesty’s message for the troops comes in addition to the traditional speech aired at 15:00 GMT.

This year’s Queen’s speech focuses on the theme of “tolerance and respect in a changing world”.

This year has seen British soldiers engaged in some intense fighting in Iraq, where around 9,000 troops are supporting the US-led coalition.

With elections due to take place in January it is likely that the security situation will remain delicate.

The government has not ruled out sending more troops to the region next year.
