Peter Murrell, the former SNP chief executive and husband of the former first minister Nicola Sturgeon, has been re-arrested.

In a statement, Police Scotland said a 59-year-old man was arrested this morning in connection with the ongoing investigation into the party’s funding and finances.

He was taken into custody at 9.13am on Thursday and is being questioned by Police Scotland detectives.

Murrell, who was previously arrested in April, resigned as the SNP’s chief executive in March 2023.

His initial arrest was the first of three as part of Operation Branchform, Police Scotland’s major investigation into SNP finances.

Police Scotland launched a formal investigation into the SNP’s finances in 2021 after receiving complaints about how donations were used.

Questions had been raised about more than £600,000 in donations given to the party for use in a fresh independence referendum campaign.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “The matter remains active for the purposes of the Contempt of Court Act 1981 and the public are therefore advised to exercise caution if discussing it on social media.

“As the investigation is ongoing we are unable to comment further at this time.”
