Cameron wades into Knox judgement

The prime minister has called for people to remember the feelings of Meredith Kercher's family as the media storm around Amanda Knox reaches fever pitch.

Ms Knox is preparing to fly back to the US after being cleared of the murder of the British student by a court in Perugia, Italy.

"What I would say is that we should be thinking of the family of Meredith Kercher because those parents had an explanation for what had happened to their wonderful daughter and that explanation isn't there anymore," David Cameron told Daybreak.

The judgement sparked furious protests outside the court room last night, as crowds demanded an appeal.

The decision is deeply embarrassing to Italy's police, who botched the operation from the very beginning.

But the decision was greeted with stunned silence from the family of Ms Kercher, who had earlier appealed to the jury to ignore the "hype" around the American, often referred to in the press as 'Foxy Knoxy'.

“We respect the decision of the judges but we do not understand how the decision of the first trial could be so radically overturned,” the Kercher family said in a statement.

“We still trust the Italian justice system and hope that the truth will eventually emerge.”

Ms Knox collapsed in a chair and began sobbing when the judgement was read out.

The case effectively fell apart when crucial DNA evidence was found by an independent review to be unreliable.
