Simon Hoare was first elected as the Conservative MP for North Dorset in 2015, being reelected in 2019 with a majority of 24,301.
Dorset North is a rural constituency to the north of Dorset bordering Wiltshire and Somerset. It contains the five small towns of Blandford Forum, Gillingham, Shaftesbury, Sturminster Newton, and Verwood. Voters here have elected Conservative MPs ever since 1950, and in one of their lowest showings anywhere in the UK, Labour polled little more than a tenth of the vote her in 2019.
Hoare serves as Chairman of the House of Commons Northern Ireland Select Committee at Westminster.
Born in 1969, Simon Hoare grew up in Cardiff and read Modern History at Oxford. He ran his own public relations business before being elected to Parliament, and served as a local government councillor for 11 years.
Hoare supported Remain in the 2016 EU referendum. He is a member of the Tory Reform Group on the moderate wing of the party.
He supported Sajid Javid in the 2019 Conservative leadership election. He has appeared critical over Boris Johnson in relation to the ‘partygate’ affair.
In the spring of 2022, Hoare attracted attention after the actor Will Smith walked on stage at the Oscars to slap the comedian Chris Rock after the latter made a joke about Mr Smith’s wife. Mr Hoare appeared to support Will Smith on Twitter saying, “I’d just hope if someone thought it in good taste to make a joke at the expense of a medical condition of my wife then I’d get up and lamp him”.
He is married with three children. His wife, Kate, works for him as a Constituency Support Manager.
At Westminster, Hoare is Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on Multiple Sclerosis, and Thalidomide. He is Vice Chair of All Party Parliamentary Group on Rural Business, and Treasurer of the Group for Eggs, Pigs and Poultry.
