Jade Botterill is the Labour Party MP for Ossett and Denby Dale, having first been elected to parliament at the 2024 general election.

In the 2024 general election, Botterill won 17,232 votes, representing 39.3% of the vote. The Conservative candidate, Mark Eastwood, received 12,690 votes (28.9%), while the Reform UK candidate, Sandra Senior, secured 9,224 votes (21.0%). Botterill was duly elected with a majority of 4,542.

The Ossett and Denby Dale constituency is located in West Yorkshire. It is a new constituency created for the 2024 general election, formed from parts of the former Wakefield, Dewsbury and Hemsworth constituencies.

The former Wakefield seat was represented by Simon Lightwood from a 2022 by-election to 2024. The constituency was won by the Conservatives at the 2019 election.

Political Career

Botterill was appointed as a junior lord of the Treasury (a government whip role) in June 2026. Her appointment followed a reshuffle triggered by John Healey’s resignation as defence secretary.

Botterill previously served as an assistant whip (2025-2026) and a parliamentary private secretary (PPS) to Yvette Cooper as home secretary.

Botterill delivered her maiden speech on 17 October 2024 in a debate on the international investment summit.

In it, she said: “Young people in Ossett and Denby Dale, and in towns and villages across our country, should not feel like they have to get out to get ahead – and yet so many of them do. To talk solely about what was once possible in our community is to betray those young people.

“Instead, our politics must be built on their dreams and on their potential: decent, secure jobs with reliable public transport to get them there; good affordable housing where they can build their families and their future; high-quality education and skills training; access to creativity and culture; aspiration, hope.”

She added: “I would also like to take the opportunity to thank my parents for their support, as well as my brother, who has always been there for me during some of the most challenging times. I am delighted that they have travelled from Wakefield to be in the public gallery today.

“My mum is so committed to the north that this is her first ever trip to London – proof, were it ever needed, that us northerners only come south if somebody makes us.”

Before entering parliament, Botterill worked as parliamentary assistant and head of office for Yvette Cooper from 2013 to 2019.

Welfare

Welfare vote (July 2025): Botterill voted in favour of the government’s flagship welfare bill at second reading. The vote came after ministers agreed to significant concessions to avoid defeat via a mass rebellion of Labour MPs on 1 July 2025.

Assisted dying

Botterill voted in favour of the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill, better known as the assisted dying bill, at both second reading (November 2024) and third reading (June 2025).

Social values and conscience issues

Abortion decriminalisation (2025): Botterill voted in favour of a backbench amendment to the Crime and Policing Bill that sought to decriminalise abortion in England and Wales in June 2025. The amendment, which was passed by a majority of 242 votes, removed women from the threat of prosecution for ending a pregnancy at any stage. As an issue of conscience, MPs were allowed to vote according to their personal beliefs.

Before Politics

Born Jade Alexandra Botterill in December 1990, she grew up in Wakefield, West Yorkshire.

She began working part-time aged 13, and started full-time work at the River Island store in Wakefield aged 16.

Botterill then held public affairs roles, including corporate affairs advisor for Yorkshire Water and public affairs manager for the campaign group 38 Degrees. She also worked for the communications consultancy Portland Communications prior to her election.

Personal Life

Botterill grew up in Wakefield. Her mother worked as a carer and her father as a prison officer.
