MDU backs call for more training and support for all doctors

The Medical Defence Union (MDU) responded to the GMC workforce report 2024 which found there needs to be more education and training opportunities for locally employed doctors, many of whom qualified from outside the UK.

Dr Udvitha Nandasoma, MDU head of advisory services, said:

“The GMC’s latest report highlights that the medical workforce is evolving into one radically different from the traditional model – there are more doctors in locally employed roles and more new to UK practice with 1 in 10 of the medical workforce undertaking their first year of UK practice. It’s vital that all doctors are valued and given opportunities to develop and thrive in the medical workforce, regardless of their place of qualification or employment status.

“The MDU recently hosted a conference for international medical graduates. They told us they often encountered challenges with career advancement and training opportunities. These doctors are a key part of the medical workforce and vital to patient care.

“We have launched a website hub for international medical graduates to help them navigate these and other challenges ahead. It’s clear more needs to be done to support all colleagues and particularly those in locally employed roles or new to UK practice.”
