Metcalfe, Stephen

Stephen Metcalfe was first elected as the Conservative MP for South Basildon & East Thurrock in 2010, being reelected in 2019 with a majority of 19,922.

The constituency of South Basildon and East Thurrock runs along the inner south Essex coast and covers the towns of Landon, Corringham, Pitsea, and Stanford-le-Hope.  Many people commute from here into London to work.  The Basildon constituency was once a swing marginal seat that was famously held by the Conservatives in 1992, before being gained by Labour in 1997.  However the boundaries of the new seat after 2010 have made it more favourable to the Conservatives ,with the party winning by nearly twenty thousand votes in 2010.    UKIP came second here in 2015, and high 73% of the electorate backed Brexit in the 2016 EU referendum.

Metcalfe was previously the Chair of the Commons Science and Technology between 2016 and 2017.  He was a government envoy for the Year of Engineering in 2018.

Born in 1966, Stephen Metcalfe worked in his family printing business before being elected to Parliament.   He was elected to Epping Forest District Council between 2002 and 2005.

Metcalfe is married with two children.  He likes designing and making models at home.

His website describes how he enjoys going to the pub in his limited spare time.

He is a Christian who supported Brexit in the 2016 EU referendum.  He backed Dominic Raab in the 2019 Conservative Party leadership election.

Stephen Metcalfe is Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on Artificial Intelligence; Science; Myalgic Encephalomyeltis (ME); He is Vice Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on Light Rail; Space; Theatre; Unconscious Bias; Kurdistan; Block Chain; Engineering; the Future of Work; and General Aviation.
