Selous, Andrew

Andrew Selous has been the Conservative MP for South West Bedfordshire since 2001, being reelected in 2019 with a majority of 18,583.

The constituency of South West Bedfordshire in the bottom left of the Bedfordshire and contains the towns of Dunstable, Leighton Buzzard and Linslade to the west of Luton.  Although this area is less affluent than some parts of Bedfordshire, it contains a strong commuter population, and has been held by the Conservatives continuously since the seat was created in 1983.

Selous served in the government as Under Secretary of State at the Ministry of Justice between 2014 and 2016.

He was appointed Second Church Estates Commissioner, responsible for representing the Church Commissioners in Parliament in 2020.

Born in 1962, Selous is the great nephew of Lord Casey, a Governor-General and Foreign Secretary of Australia. Selous was educated at Eton, and the London School of Economics.

He formerly worked as a director of his family business CNS Electronics, as an accountant with Price Waterhouse, and then a reinsurance underwriter with Great Lakes UK plc.

He was for thirteen years a Territorial Army officer with the Honourable Artillery Company and the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, serving in Cyprus, the Netherlands and Germany.

Selous is a committed Christian. He was Chairman of the Conservative Christian Fellowship and now chairs the cross party group Christians in Parliament.

In his maiden speech in 2005 he cited Wilberforce and Shaftesbury as his inspirations, and said he wished to see the Conservatives become the Party of the poor and disadvantaged. He has been a vocal backbencher, especially on social and moral questions.

Selous supported Remain in the 2016 EU referendum and backed Michael Gove in the 2019 Conservative Party leadership election.

Married with three daughters, he lives in his constituency in the villiage of Studham, near Whipsnade Zoo. He speaks French and cites his hobbies as family, walking, running, tennis and bridge.
