Osamor, Kate

Kate Osamor was first elected as the Labour MP for Edmonton in 2015, being re-elected in 2019 with a majority of 16,015.

The constituency of Edmonton is found along the banks of the River Lea in outer north London.  It covers the areas of Bush Hill Park, Edmonton, and Ponders End.     This is an ethnically diverse seat in which black and mixed race voters are said to account for over a third of the electorate.  Compared with many of the London seats, there is a relatively high amount of industry in this seat.  Although this seat was held by the Conservatives between 1983 and 1997, it has been held by the Labour Party ever since.  It is now considered a very safe seat for the Labour Party.

Osamor served as Shadow Secretary of State for International Development under Jeremy Corbyn between 2016 and 2018.

In 2018 she resigned when it emerged that her son had been arrested on drugs charges whilst employed for her as a communications officer.  Osamor had previously claimed that she did not know about the case, but it emerged that she had written to the trial judge asking for leniency.

Born in London in 1968, Kate Osamor studied Third World Studies at the University of East London.

Before being elected to Westminster, she worked as a GP Practice manager at an Enfield surgery.  She also worked for the Big Issue magazine.

Osamor is positioned on the left of the Labour Party.  She nominated Jeremy Corbyn for the Labour leadership in 2015, and served as his PPS between 2015 and 2016.  She has served on Labour’s governing National Executive Committee.

A former Haringey Councillor, Osamor is the daughter of Labour Peer, Baroness Osamor.

Kate Osamor is Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Nigeria.  She is Vice Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on Kurdistan in Turkey and Syria; Malawi; Alevis; Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic Business Owners; Knife Crime and Violence Reduction; Tamils; and Thalassaemia.
