Cameron promises game-changing EU speech next month

By Charles Maggs

The prime minister has confirmed that he will be making his much anticipated speech about Europe in the middle of January.

He made the pledge in the Commons this afternoon when taking questions about the recent European summit.

Responding to a question from Labour backbencher Gisela Stuart, who recently said Britain should leave the EU, the prime minister promised an imminent speech.

"I will be making the speech in the middle of January, and given her recent comments, I think she may like it," he told the Commons.

His response will increase speculation about the speech, given he also said he was opposed to an "immediate" in/out referendum.
