Wallis, Jamie

Jamie Wallis is‌ ‌the‌ Welsh Conservative ‌MP‌ ‌for Bridgend‌‌,‌ ‌having‌ ‌gained the seat from Labour in 2019 with a majority of 1,157.

The Bridgend constituency ‌is‌ ‌found‌ ‌towards the south of the county‌ ‌of Glamorgan‌ ‌along the M4. It covers the Welsh towns of Bridgend and the seaside resort of Porthcawl‌.   The local electorate was evenly split on Brexit in the 2016 EU referendum, and this seat had previously been held by the Labour Party ever since 1987.

Born in Bridged in 1984. Jamie Wallis studied Chemistry at Oxford University and then undertook a PhD in planetary astronomy at Cardiff University‌.

He worked as Managing Director, of Fields Associates, specialising in data recovery and forensic data consultancy, before becoming an MP.  The register of Members Interests shows him to retain a shareholding in Fields Associates.

In March 2022, Mr Wallis issued a statmeent in which he announced he had been diagnosed with gender dysphoria, becoming the first openly trans MP.

Wallis also revealed that he had been targeted by a blackmailer who threatened to out him to the public unless he paid £50,000. The MP said the offender was sentenced to two years and nine months in prison after admitting his guilt.

Wallis has also spoken about how he had previously been the victim of a rape and that ‘part of me’ had died in the attack.  He has spoken about suffering from PTSD in the aftermath of the attack.

Mr Wallis was involved in a car crash in November 2021 in which he has been accused of fleeing the scene.  In May 2022, he pleaded not guilty at Cardiff Magistrates Court to failing to stop after being involved in an accident, alongside not guilty to driving without due care and attention and leaving a vehicle in a dangerous position.
