Robert Syms was first elected as the Conservative MP for Poole in 1997 being reelected in 2019 with a majority of 19,116.

The constituency of Poole is concentrated on the Dorset coastal town of Poole and includes the famous Poole Harbour with its large yachting and boating community.  Although the Sandbanks housing estate, sometimes referred to as Britain’s “Palm Beach”, is found here, Poole is economically diverse, and also contains some areas of deprivation to  its north.  The headquarters of the RNLI are found in this constituency.  It is a safe Conservative seat with the party polling close to 60% of the vote in 2019.

Syms served as a government whip between 2016 and 2017.  He was Vice Chairman of the Conservative Party between 2001 and 2002.

Robert Syms was born in 1956. He was educated at Colston’s School, Bristol and has a Road Haulage Managers (CPC) Certificate.  He is a former Managing Director of a Building and Plant Hire Group and is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Building.

He was formerly a councillor on Wiltshire County Council and North Wiltshire District council from 1983-87.

In 2020 Syms was a member of the Covid Recovery Group and considered something of a lockdown scepetic.

Syms is divorced with two children.  He supported Leave in the 2016 Brexit referendum.
