Mark Tami first elected as the Labour MP for Alyn and Deeside in 2001, being reelected in 2019 with a majority of just 213.
The constituency of Alyn and Deeside is located in the north western corner of Wales along the border with England. Covering the east of Flintshire, this seat includes the small towns of Buckley, Caerqwrie, Connah’s Quay, Hawarden, and Shotton. Although it is more rural in the south, this seat is more industrial to its north. Tata Steel and Toyota are big employers in this area.
This area of Flintshire has voted Labour continuously at every General Election since 1950, albeit sometimes with slim majorities. In 2019, the Conservatives came their closest ever to winning this seat, but still fell slightly short. Tactical voting was said to have played a part in Tami’s victory.
Mark Tami is currently the Deputy Opposition Chief Whip at Westminster. He served as a Whip in the Labour Government of Gordon Brown between 2007 and 2010. He was an Opposition Whip between 2010 and 2015.
Born in 1962, Mark Tami was educated at Enfield Grammar School, before studying at the University of Wales in Swansea. Tami has a background in the trade union movement. Before entering Westminster, he was Head of Policy at the Amalgamated Electrical Engineers Union.
Tami is a former member of the TUC General Council and an active member of the Fabian Society.
Tami supported Remain in the 2016 EU referendum. He backed Sir Keir Starmer in the 2020 Labour leadership contest. He is a campaigner for animal welfare.
Mark Tami is Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Stem Cell Transplantation.
He is Vice Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on Historic Vehicles; Motor Neurone Disease; Shooting and Conservation; Spinal Cord Injury; Portugal; and Qatar.
He is married with two children. He employs his wife as a part time secretary.
