Nicola Sturgeon was born in Irvine, Ayrshire.

Her mother, Joan Kerr Sturgeon, worked as a dental nurse. Her father, Robin Sturgeon, worked as an electrician. Sturgeon’s mother, Joan, was herself a Scottish politician and SNP provost of North Ayrshire.

Nicola Sturgeon has a younger sister, Gillian Ferguson. Gillian was previously a nurse, but in 2022 announced on Facebook that she was leaving the NHS to become a full-time psychic medium

Nicola Sturgeon married Peter Murrell, in the summer of 2010. She was 40 years old when the pair married. The couple do not have any children.
