Biography:

David Gauke was re-elected MP for South West Hertfordshire on May 7th 2015 with 32608 votes, taking 56.9% of the vote.

David lives in Chorleywood with his wife, Rachel, and their two young sons, William (born September 2002) and Robert (born October 2004). Both the boys were born at Watford General Hospital.

David was born in 1971 and was educated at Northgate High School, a state comprehensive in Ipswich, and read law at St Edmund Hall, Oxford University. After a year working as a Parliamentary researcher, he attended Chester College of Law before becoming a trainee solicitor. He qualified as a solicitor in 1997 and worked for a leading City firm until his election as MP for Hertfordshire South West on 5 May 2005.

David’s interests outside his political activities and family include cricket, football (he is a lifelong Ipswich Town supporter), reading and country walks.

David’s Experience

David has been an active member of the Conservative Party since 1993 as a Council candidate, association officer and campaign organiser. In 2001, David was the Conservative Parliamentary candidate in Brent East, reducing the Labour majority by nearly 3,000. In 2003, David was selected as the Parliamentary candidate for Hertfordshire South West (defeating over 200 other applicants), following the announcement that Richard Page was to retire at the next General Election.

David has a strong interest in education having been educated in the state sector and a school governor of an inner-city primary school for four years. His other political priorities include tackling anti-social behaviour and campaigning for a free enterprise economy. David is opposed to Britain’s entry into the single currency.

He made his maiden speech on 9 June 2005 during the Second Reading of the Consumer Credit Bill. Since then, David has been a frequent Parliamentary speaker and highlighted a number of concerns in his constituency, such crime and anti-social behaviour, erosion of the green belt, threats to local healthcare services and burdensome regulations.

David is a co-signatory to “Direct Democracy: An Agenda for a New Model Party”, a pamphlet which calls for more powers to be devolved to local government and directly elected individuals.

David was appointed to the Conservative frontbench as part of the Shadow Treasury team in June 2007 where he has specific responsibility for matters relating to HM Revenue & Customs, such as tax credit and the taxation system. He was previously a member of the Procedures Select Committee and the Treasury Select Committee. He is a regular speaker in Parliament and spoken on issues such as the economy, education reform, the Middle East, the European Union, Hertfordshire’s hospitals and the environmental implications of the Buncefield explosion. In 2006-7, he completed the Parliamentary Police Scheme, spending 22 days with Hertfordshire Constabulary.

David Gauke was appointed to be exchequer secretary in the Treasury after the formation of the coalition in 2010. In July 2014 he became Financial Secretary to the Treasury.
