Evennett, Sir David

Sir David Evennett was first elected to Parliament in 1983 as the Conservative MP for Erith and Crayford in south east London.  He held this seat until defeat in the 1997 General Election.

Evenett was reelected for the Bexleyheath and Crayford constituency in 2005, being reelected in 2019 with a majority of 13,103.

The constituency of Bexleyheath and Crayford is found in the south east of London along its border with Kent.  With good rail and road links into the capital, this is a strong commuter area, with high levels of high ownership for a London seat.  It was narrowly won by Labour in its landslide years of 1997 and 2001, but was regained by the Conservatives in 2005.  A high 65% of the electorate backed Leave in the 2016 EU referendum, and this is one of the few seats in London which has actively trended to the Conservatives, rather than away from the party, during the last decade.

Sir David Evennett was appointed as a Government Whip (Lord Commissioner of HM Treasury) by Liz Truss in September 2022.   He was not reappointed to the government when Rishi Suank became prime minister in October 2022.

He was briefly an Assistant Government Whip under Boris Johnson between July and September 2022.

He previously served as a Government Whip between 2012 and 2019.  He then became a Vice Chairman of the Conservative Party.

Evennett supported Boris Johnson in the 2019 Conservative Party leadership election.

Born in 1949, Evennett was educated at grammar school (Buckhurst Hill County High School for Boys) and the London School of Economics. Prior to his election to Parliament, he has worked as a secondary school teacher, an insurance broker, and as a lecturer in management.

He was a councillor on Redbridge Borough Council between 1974 and 1978.

Evennett is married with two sons.

Evennett is an active member of St.Paulinus Church in Crayford.

He has listed his interests as cinema, 1960s pop music, travel and visiting National Trust properties. He particularly likes the music of Dusty Springfield and Bruce Springsteen.

Evennett was knighted in 2018.

Sir David Evennett is an officer of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Sustainable Resources.
