Poulter, Daniel

Daniel Poulter was first elected as the Conservative MP for Central Suffolk and North Ipswich in 2010, being reelected in 2019 with a majority of 23, 391.

The constituency of Central Suffolk and North Ipswich is a largely agricultural and rural seat which is one of the largest geographical seats in Suffolk.  It contains three wards from the town of Ipswich, the new town of Kesgrave, and then a whole host of villages such as Fressingfield, Mendlesham and Claydon.   Although the Labour Party reduced the Conservative majority to under 5,000 in its landslide years of 1997 and 2001, this is traditionally a very safe Conservative seat.  A fifth of the population are said to be over retirement age.

Poulter served as Under Secretary of State for Health between 2012 and 2015.

Born in 1978, Poulter was educated at Bristol University and Kings College London.

Poulter is a psychiatrist and previously worked as an NHS hospital doctor specialising primarily in obstetrics, gynaecology and women’s health.

Dr Poulter continues to practice medicine as an NHS hospital doctor on an occasional basis.  In 2021 according to he Register of Members Interests he was receiving £3,734 per month from a London Foundation Trust for work as an NHS doctor.

Outside of medicine, Dr Poulter was previously Deputy Leader of Reigate and Banstead Council between 2008 and 2010.   In his spare time he likes cricket, rugby, and golf.

Poulter was opposed to Brexit in the 2016 EU referendum.

In 2022, Poulter appeared critical of the prime minister over ‘partygate’.  He stated that should the PM have been found to have actively misled parliament, or if he faces criminal sanctions, then his position would be untenable

Dr Dan Poulter is Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Global Health.  He is  Vice Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Air Pollution.
