Brendan O’Hara has been the SNP MP for Argyll & Bute since 2015, having been reelected in 2019 with a majority of 4,110.
The Argyll and Bute constituency is a very large rural seat on the west of Scotland. It includes the coastal town of Oban, the Glasgow commuter town of Helensburgh, as well as the towns of Dalmally, Arrochar, Garelochhead, Tarbet, and Taynuilt. The islands of Mull and Iona are among twenty six islands that fall within this seat.
This constituency was once one of the few four way marginal seats in the UK, which was narrowly held by the Liberal Democrats between 1987 and 2015. It has since been held by the SNP albeit with some relatively narrow majorities over the Conservatives.
Brendan O’Hara is the SNP chief whip at Westminster.
Born in 1963, O’Hara attended Strathclyde University and worked as a television producer before being elected to Westminster. He has previously worked for STV, Sky Sports and the BBC.
O’Hara wrote, produced and directed the “Road To Referendum” documentary series, which was broadcast on STV in 2013. It was subsequently nominated for a BAFTA Scotland award in the Current Affairs category.
Brendan O’Hara is Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on Scotch Whisky; Greenland; and Democracy and Human Rights in the Gulf. He is Vice Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on Eritrea; the Falkland Islands; the Faroe Islands; Polar Regions; Christianity in the Holy Land; and International Freedom of Religion or Belief.
O’Hara is married with two daughters. He employs his as wife as his full time Office Manager
