Miliband points finger at ‘failing’ chancellor

Following the Queen’s Speech, the House of Commons are debating the cost of living today. Labour’s Ed Miliband asked what people dealing with increased costs are going to do.

He told the House that if the chancellor cannot answer that question, then he is “failing in his duty to the people of this country”. Miliband also raised the issue of windfall tax and asked why the government have not utilised this source of tax given that companies such as BP would be happy to pay it.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak told the House that he does not believe that “windfall taxes are the simple and easy answer to every problem”, but admitted that “the next few months will be difficult”.
