‘It’s personal to me’: Falklands and Gibraltar will remain British, Keir Starmer insists
The Falkland Islands and Gibraltar will remain British, Keir Starmer has pledged.
It comes after the government’s decision last week to hand sovereignty over the Chagos Islands to Mauritius prompted fierce criticism from the Conservative Party.
Addressing the House at prime minister’s questions on Wednesday afternoon, Starmer told MPs the Falklands and Gibraltar “are British and they will remain British”.
He said the issue was a “personal” one for him because his uncle had nearly died when his ship was torpedoed defending the Falklands.
The prime minister said: “My uncle nearly lost his life when his ship was torpedoed defending the Falklands. They are British and they will remain British. And sovereignty in Gibraltar is equally not to be negotiated.”
