Transport committee meet to discuss rail strikes

The transport committee sat for a special session to cover the issue of rail strikes.

Mick Whelan from the ASLEF Union and Eddie Dempsey from RMT sat to answer questions about the issue, including queries about working paid overtime, salary and working conditions.

Simon Jupp, MP for East Devon asked if strike action really was the way forward given the wavering confidence in public transport. Mick Whelan insisted that strike action was the last resort, and the workers who are “disadvantaged” by the current system are not to blame.

“If there’s strike action it’s the fault of this government and the employers, not the workers”

Another strike is set to occur on 30 July.
