NUT: Sarah Troughton and Neil Hancox are the joint winners of this year?'s Blair Peach Award

Sarah Troughton and Neil Hancox are the joint winners of this year?s Blair Peach Award.

The award is named after the past president of East London NUT who died during an anti-racist demonstration in Southall, London on 23 April 1979. On the day of his death, Blair Peach was showing solidarity and marching against the presence of the far right National Front.

Modern day equivalents to the National Front continue to promote racist and fascist views. It is vital to the National Union of Teachers that they do not gain a foothold in British politics. That is why we use our political fund to campaign vigorously against racist and fascist parties and support the work of organisations such as HOPE not hate, Unite Against Fascism, Show Racism the Red Card and Kick it Out.

The NUT Blair Peach Award this year goes jointly to Sarah Troughton, equalities officer for our Preston Association, and Neil Hancox, the Assistant Divisional Secretary in West Lancashire. They, along with their colleagues, have worked on a range of strategies to raise issues of equality and diversity. Their Burnley Anti-Racist Education Day was a huge success, bringing together pupils from seven schools. An email survey on the prevalence of homophobia reached out to a greater number of local members than ever before. School workshops and a talk for members were given by Richard Rieser during Disability History Month.

Christine Blower, General Secretary of the National Union of Teachers, the largest teachers? union, said:

?The NUT is proud of the work by so many of its members in promoting equality and diversity, and the passion and commitment of Sarah Troughton and Neil Hancox exemplifies that. Their work in highlighting issues of disability, race and homophobia are examples to us all of how we can make a difference in our own communities and workplace.?
