MDU makes it easier for doctors to manage their membership online

The Medical Defence Union (MDU), the UK’s leading medical defence organisation, has made it easier for doctors, nurses and other members to prove their membership status to an employer via the MDU app.

The MDU is the first medical defence organisation to offer this innovation, meaning members can view their proof of membership, including work details and indemnity, and share this by email or text with an employer or others. Members can also view their membership card in the app.

A member who used the new service commented he found it: “Excellent and easy to access. Very useful having proof of indemnity to hand.” The member added: “My previous indemnity provider’s [procedure] was complex and time consuming.”

Dr Caroline Fryar, MDU head of advisory services said:

“Doctors often need to prove their indemnity status to employers, the regulator and others and we want to make this an easy process. Many members have also asked us to help reduce the amount of paperwork we send to them for environmental reasons.

“The improvements we’ve made to the MDU app will mean members can get the information they need at their fingertips, without the need for a paper print out or card.”

This is the latest in a number of initiatives the MDU has introduced to make it easier for members to manage their membership online, which has the added benefit of reducing the environmental impact. Other innovations include:

Access to a digital membership card on the MDU app, allowing members to keep track of when their membership is due for renewal.

Apply for and renew membership online.

Electronic renewal documents, leading to a reduction in over 350,000 metres of paper so far. If laid end to end, this amount of paper would stretch from London to Manchester.

Jason Ellis, digital team manager added: “Over 11,000 members have already downloaded the app to manage their membership and stay up to date with the latest medico-legal news, including the latest on the Covid-19 pandemic.

“As a not for profit mutual company, we are always looking for ways to improve the benefits of membership. Further innovations will soon be available to make our members’ lives easier including the ability to add membership cards to Apple Wallet and Google Pay.”

Visit the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store to download the MDU app.
