Max Clifford arrested in Jimmy Saville investigation

PR consultant Max Clifford has been arrested as part of Operation Yewtree into historic sex offences, according to reports.

Police said a man in his sixties had been arrested as part of the investigation, which was sparked by allegations around Jimmy Saville, at 07:40GMT this morning.

Around midday, media reports indicated the man in question was Clifford.

Clifford's lawyer, Charlotte Harris, confirmed the arrest in the afternoon and said her client would assist the police "as best he can with their inquiries".

The Savile investigation has three branches – the first into the actions of Jimmy Savile, the second into allegations against "Savile and others" and the third into complaints against others. The Clifford arrest comes under the third category, meaning it is not directly linked to the BBC presenter.

He is the sixth person to be questioned as part of the investigation.

"Officers working on Operation Yewtree have this morning, Thursday 6 December, arrested a man in his 60s [Yewtree 6] in connection with the investigation," the police said in a statement.

"The man from Surrey was arrested at 07:40hrs on suspicion of sexual offences and has been taken into a central London police station.

"The individual falls under the strand of the investigation we have termed 'Others'.

"We are not prepared to discuss further."
