A new opinion poll has suggested the tide of public opinion is turning against the government’s deficit reduction plan.

A Mail on Sunday/BPIX poll put Labour at 37%, the Tories on 35% and the Lib Dems at just ten per cent.

Seventy per cent of respondents said cuts would cause widespread social unrest. Fifty-four per cent said the cuts would cause a double-dip recession.

Thirty-nine per cent said the move increases the chance of the coalition breaking up and 43% believe their family will be much worse off because of the cuts.

In general, voters still supported the need to cut.

There was considerable support for cuts to welfare specifically, although the decision to raise the retirement age to 66 was unpopular.
