A Conservative peer appearing in court over criminal charges relating to the expenses scandal has entered a not guilty plea.

John Taylor is alleged to have dishonestly claimed over £24,000 for overnight subsistence and car mileage when he lived in London.

The allowance is only available for those living outside the capital, as Lord Taylor of Warwick allegedly claimed.

At Southwark crown court this morning he entered a not guilty plea relating to six counts of false accounting relating to his second home.

Lord Taylor was made the first black Conservative peer in 1996, after unsuccessfully fighting the Liberal-Tory marginal of Cheltenham in 1992.
