Chaos in London: Tube strike hits

Commuters in London are enduring chaotic journeys home from work, after a tube strike began at 17:00 BST today.

The strike action took place in two waves, with maintenance and engineering staff walking out at 17:00 BST and drivers, signallers and station staff joining them at 21:00 BST.

The strike concerns the scrapping of 800 jobs at ticket offices and tube stations.
Workers say the move will reduce security in stations, but London Underground stressed that all stations would continue to have staff.

A separate 24-hour strike began last night, when 200 Jubilee and Northern line workers downed tools over a sub-inflation pay offer.

Commuters are being urged to find other means of getting home, with an extra 100 buses being laid on.

Escorted bike rides will go into operation and some taxi ranks will be marshalled.
