Political comedy The Thick Of It has come home with three awards from the Bafta television awards.

The political satire won best sitcom at Sunday night’s ceremony. Lead actors Rebecca Front and Peter Capaldi, who plays foul mouthed director of communications Malcom Tucker, also came back with awards.

Programme creator Armando Iannucci thanked deputy prime minister Nick Clegg for “completely destroying our plans for the next series” by entering into a coalition government with the Conservatives while collecting his award.

The Thick Of It retains immense popularity in Westminster, despite openly mocking many of the very same personalities who have become its most avid fans.

Yes Minister, to which The Thick Of It is often compared, used to fulfil a similar role, and was said by Margaret Thatcher to be her favourite TV programme.
